Dynamics of dimethylsulfoniopropionate ( DMSP ) in a migratory grazer : a laboratory simulation study

چکیده

Laboratory experiments were conducted to simulate an environment in which the copepod Acartia tonsa (Dana) migrates between food-abundant, low salinity water and food-limiting, high salinity water. The goal of this study is to understand how migratory grazers influence the dynamics of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in a vertically stratified water column. Results show that the DMSP content of A. tonsa was determined mostly by food availability instead of salinity. Individual copepods accumulated DMSP in their bodies during feeding, but most of the ingested DMSP was not retained in their body tissues. The percentage of ingested DMSP not incorporated into body tissues is estimated to range from 88 to 100%; hence, the percentage of ingested DMSP transported to deep waters by actively migrating copepods is estimated to be less than 10%. Therefore, it is suggested that grazers like A. tonsa help mediate the downward flux of DMSP by producing fast sinking fecal pellets when they are feeding in the surface waters.  2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Release and consumption of DMSP from Emiliania huxleyi during grazing b y Oxyrrhis marina

Degradation and release to solution of intracellular dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) from Emiliania huxleyi 370 was observed during grazing by the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina in 24 h bottle incubations. Between 30 and 70 % of the lost algal DMSP was metabolized by the grazers without production of dimethylsulfide (DMS) when grazer densities were 150 to 450 m l ' The rest was ...

Seasonal and spatial variability of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica

We investigated for the first time the occurrence of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in the leaves of Posidonia oceanica and we report its variability during 4 sampling periods covering the seasonal cycle (February, June, August and November) and along a gradient from 10 m to 30 m depth. The P. oceanica leaf DMSP content expressed per mass of dry weight (dw) ranged from 0.1 to 33.9 mol gdw−1 ...

The algal osmolyte DMSP as a microzooplankton grazing deterrent in laboratory and field studies

Using laboratory cultures, microcosm experiments in northern Puget Sound and field experiments in the coastal Gulf of Alaska, the role of dissolved DMSP as a protist grazing deterrent was examined. DMSP (20 mM) added to laboratory cultures of two ciliates (Strombidinopsis acuminatum and Favella sp.) and one dinoflagellate (Noctiluca scintillans) caused a 28–75% decrease in feeding rates; decrea...

Evidence for Intracellular and Extracellular Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) Lyases and DMSP Uptake Sites in Two Species of Marine Bacteria.

The kinetics of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) uptake and dimethylsulfide (DMS) production from DMSP in two bacterial species, Alcaligenes sp. strain M3A, an isolate from estuarine surface sediments, and Pseudomonas doudoroffii, from seawater, were investigated. In Alcaligenes cells induced for DMSP lyase (DL) activity, DMS production occurred without DMSP uptake. In DL-induced suspensions o...
